The pivotal 8.77 billion lei (EUR 1.77 billion) financing contract under the National Recovery and Resilience Program (PNRR) has been signed, earmarked for the significant modernization of the 162 km Caransebeş – Timişoara – Arad railway line. This comprehensive project is divided into four sections: Caransebeş – Lugoj, Lugoj – East Timisoara, East Timisoara – Ronat Triage Gr. D, and Ronat Triage Gr. D – Arad. The PNRR funds will facilitate crucial enhancements in the southwest’s infrastructure, including doubling the entire railway line, enabling trains to reach speeds of 160 km/h, modernizing stations, constructing pedestrian walkways, aligning platforms with European standards, establishing urban passenger stops, eliminating level crossings, and constructing two maintenance buildings, a regional traffic management center, and an ERTMS system. Importantly, the project involves upgrading and doubling approximately 14 km of the line from Timişoara East to Ronat without service interruptions on the existing section.
